भारतीय आध्यात्मिक संस्कृति मे साधना मार्ग तथा संप्रदाय भेद अपने आप मे बहोत ही विविधता लिए हुए है.  जो शिव उपासना का मार्ग मुख्य शैव मार्ग रहा उसे भी दो विभाग मे बांटा गया. मंत्र मार्ग तथा उपासना मार्ग. उपासना मार्ग मुख्य रूप से पौराणिक मार्ग कहा जाता है, जब की मंत्र मार्ग को विकसित या अपौराणिक कहा गया है. मंत्र मार्ग मे शिव उपासना के कई सम्प्रदाय है

कापालिक मार्ग – यह मार्ग अपने आप मे श्रेष्ठ था. सिद्धो से सुनाने मे आया है की इसकी प्रचुरता अत्यधिक थि और इनके मुख्य मठ वाराणसी तथा सोमनाथ जेसे प्रसिद्द शैव स्थल हुआ करते थे लेकिन इस मार्ग की अत्यधिक दुर्दशा हुई.

लिंगमार्ग या लिंग्यात – यह मार्ग शिवलिंग की साधना पर ही मुख्य रूप से आधारित है. यह मार्ग वैसे द्रविड़ और दक्षिण भारत मे प्रचलित रहा. प्रतिष्ठा विधान के पक्ष पर इस मार्ग मे खूब जोर दिया जाता है. इसी मार्ग को शिव सिद्धांत मार्ग भी कहा गया है. वैसे यह मार्ग अतिमार्ग नाम के मार्ग से भी जोड़ा गया है. जिसमे प्रतिष्ठा मुख्य और मंत्र साधना का प्रचलन कम रहा है.

पाशुपत मार्ग – यह मार्ग मे भगवान पाशुपत की साधना ही मुख्य है. नेपाल तथा भारत के सीमावर्ती राज्य इसका मुख्य केंद्र रहा है

कालमुख मार्ग – यह भगवान महाकाल की साधना का मुख्य मार्ग था जिसका केन्द्र मध्य भारत रहा है

कश्मीरी शैव मार्ग – यह अत्यधिक प्रचालित मार्ग है, जो की कश्मीरी पंडितो के मध्य व्यापक रूप से उपस्थित था. जिसका गढ़ मुग़ल शाशन से पहले तक जम्मू और कश्मीर हुआ करता था

अघोर मार्ग – यह मार्ग अपने आप मे उच्च कोटि का रहा है. वाराणासी, गिरनार, अबुर्द, पंचमढ़ी, जबलपुर, गोरखपुर के आसपास का क्षेत्र यह सब जगह इस मार्ग का व्यापक प्रचलन रहा है.

इसके अलावा भी कई मार्ग प्रचलन मे रहे है जो की एक दूसरे से किसी न किसी रूप मे सबंधित रहे है. इसमें से ज्यादातर मार्ग आज लुप्त हो चुके है लेकिन तंत्र साहित्य मे इनका बराबर से वर्णन मिलता है.

यहाँ हम संक्षिप्त मे चर्चा करेंगे कापालिक मार्ग की.

कापालिक सम्प्रदाय शिव उपासना का एक अद्भुत मार्ग रहा है. इस मार्ग मे दीक्षित साधक को कापालिक या भैरव कहा जाता ही जब की साधिका को देवी शक्ति या त्रिपुर सुंदरी. यह मार्ग मे मुख्य देव शिव तथा उनकी आदि शक्ति को ही इष्ट के रूप मे स्वीकार किया गया है. इसमें भी दो भेद है. कई कापालिक इसके अलावा दूसरे देवी देवताओ का अस्तित्व स्वीकार नहीं करते. लिंग तथा योनी को ही वो प्रतीक मे शिव तथा शक्ति के रूप मे देवी देवता की उपाधि देते है. लेकिन दूसरा मार्ग देवी देवताओ तथा दूसरी शक्तियो का अस्तित्व स्वीकार करता है तथा उनकी साधना भी. इस मार्ग की साधना मुख्य रूप से मांस, मदिरा तथा मैथुन पर आधारित है. मंत्र शोधित मांस और मदिरा के साथ मैथुन क्रिया करने पर विविध सिद्धयो की प्राप्ति इस मार्ग की उपासना पद्धति थि. यह मार्ग तलवार की धार पर चलने जेसा अत्यधिक कसोटी पूर्ण मार्ग है. क्यों की इस मार्ग मे साधक वैभव मुक्ति नहीं करता. साधक को वैभव पूर्ण रहना है लेकिन निर्लिप्त. कापालिको के मठ किसी महेल से नीची कक्षा के नहीं हुआ करते थे. मूल्यवानरत्न तथा स्वर्णआभूषण हमेशा इनको सुशोभित करते रहते थे. तथा विलास पूर्ण जीवन व्यतीत करते हुए भी साधक को उससे निर्मोहित रहना होता था. और यही कारण रहा की कई व्यक्ति इस मार्ग की तरफ आकर्षित हुए तथा यही कारण बना इस मार्ग का. In Indian Spiritual Culture the Sadhna path and established doctrine peculiarities have various varieties in itself. The Shaiv Marg which is the main path of Lord Shiva reverence can be divided into two parts. Mantra path and Upasana (worship) Path. The worshipping path is mostly known as Mythological path whereas the Mantra Path is known as developed or non-mythological path. In Mantra path there are many ways of worshipping Lord Shiva.

Kapalik Path – This was the best known. It has been heard from the Siddhas that this path has been mostly found one. Its main places known as Mathas are found in Varanasi and the famous place like Somnath is known as Shaiv place but later it has drowned down pathetically.

Lingmarg or Lingyat – This path is based on the ling (genital) of Shiva. This one is especially famous in Dravids and Southern India. On the side of Pratishtha Vidhan this was emphasized more. The other name of this path is Shiv Sidhant Marg also. By the way it has also been added to the Atimarg in which the establishment and mantra sadhna is included most.

Pashupat Marg – This way is mainly used for God Pashupat sadhnas. The main areas where it has been practiced is Nepal and border lines of India.

Kaalmukh Maarg – This is the main path of Mahakaal Sadhna which has been practiced in central India.

Kashmiri Shaiv Marg – This was most famous path which was used between Kashmiri Pandits. And their main place where it was used was Jammu and Kashmir before the Mughal rulers.

Aghor Marg – This is most high level of path amongst all. The areas nearby Varanasi, Girnar, Aburd, Pachmadi, Jabalpur, Gorakhpur is the common place for Aghor practitioners.

Apart from all these, there are many other ways which were in light and attached with each other in either way. Today many has been disappeared but prominently metioned in Tantra textures.

Now let’s discuss in brief about the Kapalik Marg.

Kapalik Sampradaay is a wonderful path of Shiva’s reverence. The one who is dikshit in this path is known as Kapalik or bhairav whereas female practioners are known as Devi Shakti or Tripur Sundari. In this Path mostly the Dev Shakti and their Aadi Shakti is accepted mainly. There are two difference of it. Many kapaliks doesn’t accept the other forms of Gods and Goddess. They treat Ling and Yoni (genitals of male and female) as their Gods and Goddess. But in the other path accepts the identity of other gods and goddess and their related sadhnas also. This is based on Meat, alcohol and Sex. Along with the purified Meat and alcohol, the sexual activities are done and this leads to different siddis and that’s how it works. This is toughest path as good as walking on sword. Because in this path the sadhak doesn’t do anything just for sake of getting pleasure. Rather he has to be uncontaminated detached from the acts. Well the class of Kapalik was not less than any king size rather they were always decorated with the valuable gems and golden jewelleries. And while spending luxurious life they have to become the hardest form as unanointed. That’s how many were attracted towards it and becomes the only reason of this path.
